Within the past year, here at the Wheaton Fire Department Brothers are becoming interested in cycling. A lot of our members have gone out and purchased bicycles and have done a good amount of riding. With this, many of our brothers cannot ride together as they work on different shifts. Many of us have also heard that there are other firefighters from different towns that enjoy cycling. That is why we thought it might be a good idea to see if the AFFI would sponsor or support a cycling club for the AFFI members and families. Before we take this to the AFFI Executive Board, our brothers wanted to see if there was an interest with other locals to see if cycling is worth looking into further. The basic idea for this club would be for firefighters and families to go on group rides together and possibly participate in centuries or races. Even if people haven’t ridden before, this would be a great opportunity to get started. Just with brainstorming this idea, our brothers thought about doing rides two to three times a month and on different shifts. We have also thought about creating and designing cycling apparel with the AFFI logos on it. Cycling with our brothers would generate a positive perception towards the public as it increase fitness, social networking, and general public awareness. At this time, it is in the beginning stages of planning or starting this idea. What we are looking for is if there is any interest in your local, and if there is any other ideas or suggestions that would help formulate this club.
